26 Filipino seafarers from M/V Gingo arrive in Manila

Twenty-six (26) Filipino seafarers who were aboard the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier M/V Gingo have arrived safely in Manila (on 12 September) following a strike that damaged the vessel while it was operating in Ukraine.

Assistant Secretary for Pre-Employment Services Julyn S. Ambito-Fermin of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), along with representatives from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) Medical Team, welcomed the repatriated seafarers. The crew received airport and financial assistance from the DMW and OWWA and underwent initial medical checks upon arrival.

The DMW and OWWA directed the manning agency to facilitate the seafarers’ required physical and psychological assessments, debriefing, and the provision of applicable benefits and compensation.

The DMW also expressed its appreciation to the Philippine Embassy in Warsaw, Poland; the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in the Czech Republic; and the Philippine Honorary Consulate in Kyiv for their assistance and coordination in facilitating the seafarers’ safe repatriation.

Following the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the DMW reminded licensed manning agencies and their accredited principals to continuously monitor the status and condition of their deployed seafarers, ensure adherence to required safety precautions, and comply with established protocols for vessels carrying Filipino seafarers through the Black Sea.

The DMW likewise emphasised the importance of maintaining close coordination with the relevant authorities and taking appropriate measures to safeguard Filipino seafarers, particularly those deployed in areas affected by armed conflict and other security threats.
