Explosives discovered on board have been called 'Weapons of Mass Destruction'.

Port authorities have detained a Russian cargo vessel, suspected of carrying weapons and explosives, just off the coast of Port Elizabeth.

According to Herald Live, authorities discovered explosives on board the vessel on Sunday, while conducting operations in the Port of Ngqura, which lies 20 kilometres northeast of Port Elizabeth.

Worryingly, sources close to the matter have described the contraband as ‘weapons of mass destruction’. The vessel is currently anchored 15 kilometres off the Nelson Mandela Bay coastline, as ordered by local authorities.

While authorities have confirmed the bust, they’re remaining mum on the exact nature of the illicit cargo found onboard.

Police say that the value of explosives and weapons found on board the Russian vessel are valued at about R50 million.
Tip-off leads to explosive discovery

According to a source who wishes to remain anonymous, the Russian vessel was inspected following a tip-off, after it had already offloaded 14 containers at the port.

The ship, named the Lada, had produced all the relevant permits relating to the cargo it offloaded on South African shores. The containers were dispatched by a company named Solar India.
