According to Nippon Yusen Kaisha Line (NYK), a testbed has been established for an Internet of Ships Open Platform (IoS-OP) that will be used to improve vessel safety and reduce environmental loads.

The IoS-OP consortium, which includes shippers, shipyards and manufacturers, was launched in June 2018 to utilize data collected from vessels operating within the maritime industry.

When conducting tests by satellite, for data transmitted between equipment on board and on shore, many limitations exist due to arrangements between related parties and ship schedules.

Data centre ShipDC, in collaboration with NYK, has built a testbed that allows for tests to be conducted more easily, by recreating a similar environment to the one found on board.

The Japanese shipping company has also teamed up with Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) to develop an IoT platform, enabling the remote distribution and management of onboard applications from land offices.

NYK is providing this IoT platform so that the consortium will be able to test software which needs to be frequently updated and collected through a standardized system.

This is expected to accelerate the collection of data and further optimize its use.

NYK Group has stated that it “will continue to advance digitalization by collaborating with various partners and making use of the group’s operational expertise and accumulated data to create new value.”
