A ship rammed into the seawall at the Port of Batangas on Friday morning, the Maritime Industry Authority has reported.

Initial investigation showed that MV RDI Genesis 1 rammed into the seawall of the port due to a starboard side throttle that malfunctioned.

The incident damaged the vessel’s forward portion, including its passenger ramp, and rendered it unsafe to continue operation.

The vessel is owned by of RDI Genesis Shipping Inc. based in Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro.

"The Passenger Ship Safety Certificate of MV RDI Genesis 1 is hereby ordered suspended until further notice from this authority,” Marina Region 4 officer-in-charge Sharon Aledo said in her letter to the shipping company.

Marina said the accident happened while the vessel was maneuvering for docking at Fastcraft Berth No. 5, some 50 meters from the sea wall.

Both throttles of the vessel’s engine were at neutral position, the report added.

Aledo said the vessel would be subjected to a thorough safety inspection by Marina inspectors and surveyors.

“This is in order to determine the seaworthiness prior to lifting of the suspension order, for your immediate and strict compliance,” Aledo said. -Llanesca Panti/NB, GMA News
