Two general cargo ships collided off the coast of Chiba, Japan on Sunday, with three crew members still missing after the incident.

The Japanese-flagged ships Sensho Maru and Sumiho Maru, both 499-ton vessels, collided about 12km off Cape Inubosaki in Chiba, and Sensho Maru sank after the collision.

As of Sunday evening, one of the five crews of Sensho Maru were rescued and another one was confirmed dead, while the other three were still missing.

The coast guard have sent five patrol vessels, a helicopter and a special search-and-rescue unit to find the missing men.

Sumiho Maru returned to Kashima port after the incident and all four crew members aboard the ship are safe.

According to the Japanese coast guard, visibility in the area was poor at the time of the accident due to heavy fog.

The 2011-built Sensho Maru, owned by Japanese company Katsumaru Kaiun, was transporting steel product when the accident happened.
