Foreign maritime students recently visited the Philippines to educate themselves with the country’s maritime industry.

The World Maritime University sent 13 students from Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Liberia, Argentina, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, India, and Fiji to the Philippine Coast Guard for a field study program Monday.

As part of their Maritime Education Training, they were briefed about the organization’s functions, mandates, and modernization developments.

The delegates were also given a short vessel tour on Coast Guard’s multi-role response vessel BRP Tubbataha (MRRV 4401).

The visit also provided the students an opportunity to learn from the country’s public administration, management and operational aspects of its maritime industry and maritime education and training, according to Coast Guard.

Maritime Education Training (MET) provides the knowledge essential for the optimization of maritime education systems under international law.

According to Coast Guard, it is a specialization designed for officers in leadership and administration of human development process in the work context, of maritime education and training, and organizational management in both academic and non-academic settings.

A total of 59 Coast Guard scholars graduated from the World Maritime University programs since 1993 in various specializations such as MET, MET (navigation),maritime safety and environmental administration, maritime safety and environmental protection, maritime safety affairs (engineering), maritime safety affairs (navigation), maritime affairs, marine environmental and ocean management, integrated coastal and ocean management, maritime law and policy, and maritime affairs (post-graduate program).

The delegates were also treated with a welcome dinner Monday hosted by the Deputy Chief of Coast Guard Staff for Education and Training led by Captain Vivien Jane Cay.
