A crewmember hemorrhaging blood on a container ship 55 miles off the San Francisco coast was taken by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter to San Francisco and then treated at a hospital Tuesday, a Coast Guard spokesman said today.

The man, a 35-year-old from Taiwan, injured his hand around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday and the crew of his ship, the YM Eminence, was having trouble controlling the bleeding, according to Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer Cory Mendenhall.

The Coast Guard sent an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter to transport the man, Mendenhall said.

A member of the Coast Guard was lowered to the deck of the vessel from the helicopter, according to Coast Guard Lt. Anders Manley, who led the rescue team.

"He assessed the best way to get him up in the helicopter and called for the basket and got the survivor in the basket," Manley said.

The man was then lifted up to the helicopter in the basket, and the helicopter crew took the injured man to Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco where an ambulance was waiting to take him to a hospital, Manley said.

Manley said the rescue went well.

"They did the right thing by reaching out to the Coast Guard," Manley said.
