More interest have been shown by women to join the maritime industry.

As the Maritime Safety Authority prepares to celebrate World Maritime Day next week, Acting Chief Executive Captain Philip Hill says they’re also encouraging more women participation.

“Throughout the world there is the trend, gender equality and empowering of women, some countries they look at having 20 percent females in organizations, we have started, but we have encouraging signs and trends where there is an increase in females interested in the maritime industry.”

There are currently 92 registered female seafarers.

Captain Hill adds 18 women will be recognized this year as part of World Maritime Day celebrations.

He adds this will fit well with this year’s theme “Empowering Women in Maritime Community”

A grand celebration will be held at Sukuna Park in Suva next Friday.
