‘OTHERS NEED OUR HELP’--Tagle to seafarers: Don’t forget the poor

MANILA, Philippines — Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Manila archbishop, on Sunday urged the Catholic faithful, particularly seafarers, not to forget the poor as they earn more and achieve comfort in life along with their families.

“When our life gets better, let’s not forget the less fortunate,” he said in his homily to mark National Seafarers Day.

“All of us are aspiring to provide a better life for our families and our country, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But let’s not use our talents and intelligence only for our own interest,” Tagle added.

Don’t be blinded by wealth

He reminded the faithful not to be blinded and numb by comfort, wealth and luxury.

“We all hope that our life and the lives of our families get better, and that they no longer experience hardships, that’s good,” the prelate said.

“As we strive to make our lives better, may this not lead us to forgetting our roots, neglecting those who need our help. Real progress also means progress in sympathizing and helping our fellowmen. But if it leads us to becoming numb and blind to the needs for others, then you cannot call it real progress,” Tagle stressed.

“Through you, may we see that the sacrifices to have a better life do not lead to becoming numb, lack of sympathy and care for those in need,” he added.

Tagle also reminded the faithful to continue praying for the welfare of seafarers and other migrant workers.
