Security services raided the St Petersburg office of Transas yesterday, seeking access to the company’s Transas Navigator databases.

The Federal Security Service (FSB) was widely reported to have launched the raid on the facility, which is now owned by Finnish firm, Wärtsilä.

Transas, which makes marine navigation systems and simulators, was bought by Wärtsilä last year.

The FSB is remaining tight lipped about why it decided to target the company. FSB officers were in the Transas offices for around seven hours yesterday.

As well as handling Russian sales, the office is also involved in some research and development projects.

“Based on our current knowledge the authorities are interested in an individual Russian customer. The local management is fully cooperating with the authorities. Information shared with authorities is limited to this specific customer,” a spokesperson for Wärtsilä told Splash today.
