The port of Antwerp is operating minus a gantry shore crane after yet another boxship collision.

In squally conditions, the 9,200 teu APL Mexico City broke its mooring yesterday afternoon and slammed into a crane at DP World’s Antwerp Gateway terminal.

No one was in the crane at the time, which collapsed and forced a complete closure of the terminal.

With quay cranes tumbling around the world in the last couple of years insurer TT Club has been keeping a tally on the damage done.

TT Club claims analysis continue to flag quay crane issues as giving rise to the highest cost incidents for ports and terminal operators. Remarkably as of November last year, TT Club had handled 325 cases of crane collisions in the previous 10 years.
