A Maersk containership broke down and began drifting shortly after departing Algeciras, Spain to Newark, New Jersey.
Maersk said in a Jan. 30 customer advisory that the Maersk Batur suffered main engine damage which will cause the vessel to be delayed.
“The Nautical department is sailing the vessel to tow her to Algeciras Port in order to state inspections and fix the issue,” Maersk said in the advisory.
“Based on the latest information received and as a result of this incident, the vessel is expected to be delayed. Contingency being worked upon,” the advisory reads.
AIS shows the containeship is now moored near the Port of Algeciras in the Strait of Gibraltar.
The Singapore-flagged Maersk Batur has a nominal capacity of 3075 TEU. It was built in 2009.
