THE Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) hosted a delegation from Indonesia to share insights and practices within the country’s maritime industry on 31 July 2024. The Indonesian delegates aimed to learn from the Philippines’ expertise in the seafaring sector, particularly in certification, maritime education and training, among others.

The MARINA, led by OIC Deputy Administrator for Planning Nenita S. Atienza and STCW Office Executive Director Samuel L. Batalla, welcomed the Indonesian delegates led by Deputy of Placement and Protection for Asia and Africa Region Mr. Lasro Simbolon.

STCW Office’s Maritime Education and Training Standards Supervisor (METSS), and Concurrent Chief of the Monitoring Division, and the Public Information Division Mr. Herbert V. Nalupa presented an overview of the MARINA. His presentation likewise covered the implementation of the STCW Convention in the Philippines and the accreditation processes for training institutions, assessment centers, instructors, and assessors.

METSS and concurrent Certification Division Chief Ms. Madiline Joanna F. Galve discussed the certification processes for seafarers through the MISMO System, and introduced the Blockchain Enabled System.

The Indonesian delegates were also given a tour of MARINA’s processes, including the evaluation of applications for STCW certificates, the theoretical examination, and the monitoring of assessment centers. These detailed insights provided the delegation with a comprehensive understanding of the Philippines’ robust seafaring framework.

The Indonesian delegation’s visit highlighted the importance of international collaboration in addressing challenges and leveraging opportunities within the maritime sector. The visit also underscored the commitment of the Philippines to uphold high standards in the seafaring sector, ensuring that Filipino seafarers remain competitive in the global maritime industry.
