A young man was miraculously plucked from the ocean after he fell off a ship with no lifejacket and had to tread water for three hours.

U.S. Coast Guard rescuers found Lorejei Moscoso, 25, five miles off Fort Lauderdale, Florida, about 9.30am on Wednesday.

Photos from an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter showed how much of a needle in a haystack the search was, with the Filipino man a tiny speck in the water.

Mr Moscoso was last seen by the crew of the 456ft container ship Vega Sagittarius about 5.30am as he tied down some cargo.

However, he was not reported missing until 6.40am when the Liberian vessel docked in Port Everglades and realized he was gone.
