MANILA – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) lauded the Norway-flagged ship MV Sunny Victory after it rescued a stranded Filipino fisherman west of Calavite Point in Mindoro on Monday.

In a statement on Wednesday, the PCG said the fisherman, 35-year-old Michael Conquesto, was fishing on a small vessel at around 4 a.m. when the boat encountered engine failure and lost contact with his mother boat, FB Anton Char.

Conquesto was stranded and adrift until MV Sunny Victory spotted his distress call and came to his aid.

“The PCG Command Center was alerted to the situation at 3:30 p.m. through a satphone call from the 2nd mate of MV Sunny Victory. At the time of the rescue, the cargo vessel was navigating west of Calavite Point on its way to Sandakan, Malaysia,” it said.

PCG District Palawan has since transferred the fisherman to his mother boat “in good condition.”

“On behalf of President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr., the PCG commends MV Sunny Victory for their swift response,” it said.

“This incident highlights the importance of maritime cooperation and the shared commitment to preserving lives at sea,” the PCG said. (PNA)
