MANILA – The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has partnered with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the local government of Batanes to enhance maritime safety and awareness.
In a statement on Monday, MARINA said a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed on March 12 to establish a collaborative framework to enhance safety initiatives, regulatory enforcement, and educational campaigns in the province.
“With its challenging seascape and unpredictable weather, Batanes presents unique risks for maritime travel. MARINA, the provincial government and the PCG reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety of all maritime stakeholders through sustained education, enforcement, and collaboration,” it said.
The MOU signing was led by MARINA Regional Office I and II Director Jedini Nur Sibal, Batanes Governor Marilou Cayco, municipal mayors, and representatives from PCG-Batanes.
Cayco said sea travel is essential to Batanes' daily life and economic activities.
“Every journey across the province’s waters carries a great responsibility, underscoring the need to ensure that all boats, vessels and crew members are equipped with the necessary knowledge and resources to navigate safely,” she said.
Sibal said maritime safety “goes beyond mere compliance with regulations.”
“The initiative is about preserving lives, strengthening communities and fostering a culture where safety becomes second nature,” he said.
In addition to the signing of the MOU, MARINA also held the third leg of its Maritime Safety Awareness Campaign Caravan.
The campaign featured interactive training sessions and information drives on navigational safety, weather preparedness and passengers’ rights to equip seafarers and fisherfolk with essential knowledge to prevent accidents and respond to emergencies.
PCG-Batanes also highlighted the importance of strict adherence to maritime regulations, urging boat operators to prioritize safety measures such as wearing life jackets and ensuring vessel seaworthiness. (PNA)
