An oil spill occurred off Louisiana after a 61-foot motor vessel hit the Breton Sound 18 production platform, causing the discharge of about 840 gallons of crude from the rig.

Nobody was reported injured in the incident.

Personnel from Environmental Safety & Health (ES&H) – a body that provides environmental response services throughout the US Gulf Coast, Texas and northern Louisiana – deployed containment boom around the spill.

Multiple other agencies including the US Coast Guards (USCG) Sector New Orleans responded to the scene.

USCG is investigating the cause of the incident.

Breton Sound, where the incident happened, is off the southeast coast of Louisiana and is partially enclosed by the Breton Islands.
