President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Wednesday lauded Filipino seafarers as he recognized their contribution to global trade and maritime operation
As the country commemorates the Day of Filipino Seafarers, Marcos acknowledged the maritime workers for their discipline, skill, and tireless dedication despite the demanding nature of their work as well as the long periods that they are away from their homes.
“In every machinery of global trade, and in every sea where a vessel sails, lies the quiet strength of a Filipino seafarer—proud, disciplined, and tireless,” Marcos said in his message.
“Their work is demanding, their time away from home long, and yet they continue to serve with skills and silent endurance,” he added.
He also reaffirmed the country’s collective responsibility to uplift the welfare of the seafarers.
Marcos said the mission of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) is to ensure that the seafarers are equipped, protected, and recognized as part of the nation’s development.
“The MARINA’s mission is grounded in policies that matter, in training that empowers, and in a vision that sees our maritime workforce as a global asset and a national pride,” Marcos said.
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said about 504,000 Filipino seafarers were deployed in 2024, while the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas recorded US$6,941,085 remittances from the sea-based sector in 2024. —RF, GMA Integrated News
