June 25 marks a momentous occasion, the annual Day of the Seafarer, dedicated to honoring the contributions of maritime workers worldwide.

This year, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. praised Filipino seafarers, often referred to as the “quiet strength” behind the extensive machinery of global trade and maritime operations.

The Philippines is one of the largest suppliers of seafarers in the world, with approximately 504,000 Filipino seafarers deployed in 2024, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

As the sun rose over the busy ports of the Philippines, hundreds of skilled Filipino seafarers prepared to embark on their journeys across the oceans, leaving their families behind for extended periods.

The commitment and resilience of seafarers reflect their professional spirit; every vessel that sets sail carries not just cargo but also the dedication of these maritime workers.

In his message, President Marcos captured the essence of seafarers’ work: “In every machinery of global trade, and in every sea where a vessel sails, lies the quiet strength of a Filipino seafarer—proud, disciplined, and tireless.”

It shows the unique contributions of the Filipino workforce despite the challenges they face, including extended periods away from home and the demanding nature of their responsibilities.

In 2024 alone, Filipino seafarers made a significant contribution to the global economy. Their remittances, which totaled approximately USD 6.9 billion in 2024, serve as a lifeline for countless Filipino families.

Exploring the mission of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), President Marcos stressed the need for policies that empower these workers with proper training. Recognition is vital as the maritime industry faces constant changes and challenges, including the need for improved working conditions and enhanced safety protocols.

“The MARINA’s mission is grounded in policies that matter, in training that empowers, and in a vision that sees our maritime workforce as a global asset and a “national pride,” he stated.

This year, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) initiated the campaign “My Harassment-Free Ship,” aimed at promoting respect and ensuring a zero-tolerance policy for bullying and harassment at sea.

The initiative aligns with the President’s call for a renewed commitment to uphold the dignity of Filipino seafarers and expand their opportunities. The movement towards creating a safer working environment is a big step in improving the overall experience of seafarers.

As the world celebrates the Day of the Seafarer, it is apt to acknowledge the Filipino seafarers as silent titans of the ocean. Their unwavering commitment, skill, and resilience significantly contribute to global trade and the economy, making them invaluable to both the Philippines and the world at large. #
