TAGBILARAN CITY – Seafarers, maritime students, and stakeholders in Bohol celebrated the Day of the Filipino Seafarer on Wednesday, highlighting the vital role of maritime workers and advocating for a safer, harassment-free work environment at sea.

A short program was organized by the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina), Southern Institute of Maritime Studies, local maritime schools, training centers, and seafarers’ families at the provincial capitol.

Organizers are also using this year’s event to amplify awareness on the importance of harassment-free ships, aiming to foster safer, inclusive, and supportive workplaces for all maritime workers.

Bohol, a tourist destination, is one of the top 10 producing provinces of seafarers.

Panglao Mayor Edgardo “Boy” Arcay shared his journey as a seaman until he became an international sea captain.

“Be kind. You must pray for the safety of your husband while at sea,” Arcay told the wives of the seafarers.

He said that” becoming a seaman is to see the world for free.”

“Today, we celebrate the important role that our seafarers play in international trade and the global economy, while also highlighting their role in shaping a society that is “smart, resilient, and inclusive,” he said.

“We honor our seafarers for the daily sacrifices they make to provide better lives for their families and deliver goods while passing through areas that are prone to piracy and other life-threatening situations,” he added.

Aumentado assured that the provincial government will always support every initiative that protects and enhances the gallant seafarers.

For its part, the United Nations Organization continues to recognize the important role that seafarers play in the continued growth of the global economy and the promotion of safety of life at sea and the protection of the marine environment, and has included the “Day of the Seafarer” in its list of days for observance.

Marina said the Philippines continues to be the leading provider of qualified, competent, and certificated seafarers by said standards./coa
