The remains of a Filipino seafarer who perished after an attack of Houthi rebels on the MV Minervagracht in the Gulf of Aden last months are now in the country, the Department of Migrant Workers said.
In a statement, the DMW said the remains of the Filipino seafarer who died after the Sept. 29 attack arrived in the Philippines on Sunday night.
The remains were received by the seafarer’s family, assisted by personnel from the DMW, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, and the licensed manning agency that deployed the seafarer.
The remains will be first brought to Iligan City, the hometown of his wife. The remains will be then transported to Zamboanga del Sur where the seafarer’s parents and other family members live.
The DMW expressed its deepest condolences to the family of the slain Filipino seafarer and assured that the family will receive adequate assistance and support, as ordered by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The DMW also appealed to the public to respect the privacy of the bereaved family.
The government agency is investigating if the manning agency and the foreign principal have any liability in the death of the Filipino seafarer.
The manning agency and the foreign principal may face sanctions if they are found to have violated the DMW’s rules and regulations.
Ten other Filipino seafarers who survived the attack returned to the country on Oct. 4 while an injured seafarer returned on Oct. 10 and is currently recuperating. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
