THE circumstances surrounding the death of an unnamed Filipino seafarer onboard a British cruise ship is still under investigation by authorities.

The victim, whose identity was withheld, reportedly figured in a workplace accident last Oct. 26, two days after M/V Arvia departed Southampton for a transatlantic voyage to Bridgetown, Barbados.

P&O Cruises, the company operating M/V Arvia, confirmed the news, saying that details remain under investigation.

Initial information revealed that the said crew member was fatally injured in an elevator accident.

Local authorities in Spain reported that Arvia made an emergency stop in La Coruna after the accident. Emergency teams, including local fire crews, were present onboard for several hours while the ship remained docked during the afternoon and evening before later continuing toward Tenerife.

P&O Cruises expressed its sympathies, stating that support has been made available to the family and to the crew members onboard who are grieving the sudden loss of their friend.

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) also offered its condolences to the family and loved ones of the said Filipino crew member.

It also ensured that all necessary support is provided to the bereaved family. It, along with the licensed manning agency (LMA) that deployed the seafarer, has already notified the family and continues to offer assistance and regular updates on every development of the case.

The LMA also reported that they are in ongoing coordination with the vessel owner to ensure a thorough and transparent process.

“This loss is profoundly mourned throughout the maritime community. Our seafarers serve with dedication and bravery in international waters, and we honor their service, professionalism, and sacrifice. The Department remains committed to protecting the welfare, safety, and dignity of every Filipino worker abroad, especially during times of grief and hardship,” the DMW said in an official statement.
