The Philippines remains to be a top source of seafarers worldwide due to its pool of English proficient and highly skilled talents, according to global marine travel and logistics company ATPI.

In a news statement, ATPI Philippines president Yvette Araullo said that “demand for Filipino seafarers has grown steadily over the past year, particularly in offshore energy, short-sea container trades and passenger vessels.”

“We expect 5% to 7% annual growth through emerging hubs over the next 12–18 months, and ATPI continues to invest in technology, airline partnerships and local infrastructure to support rising needs,” said Araullo.

BIMCO/International Chamber of Shipping Seafarer Workforce Report 2024 estimated that the number of seafarers serving on merchant ships trading internationally at approximately 1.89 million, comprising 857,540 officers and 1,035,180 ratings or the individuals responsible for general deck duties and the engine room.

“These trends and figures are reshaping the way Filipino seafarers are deployed worldwide and underscore the need for enhanced digitalization and operational agility,” said Araullo.

“The Philippines, meanwhile, continues to be among the most important crew source markets for ATPI’s international maritime operations, given its deep pool of highly skilled, English-proficient seafarers,” she added.

To meet rising demand, Araullo said ATPI continues to invest through enhanced data visibility, flexible travel solutions and strengthened partnerships with airlines and marine agencies worldwide.

The company has also expanded its marine infrastructure across major transit hubs and bolstered airline partnerships to secure capacity for time-sensitive crew changes.

ATPI also strengthened their commitment to the Philippines by opening their World Support Center (WSC) in Manila to offer a comprehensive, 24/7 suite of travel management services.

The facility represents a bold investment in first-class Filipino talent and bolsters the company's operations through innovative service offerings, dynamic partnerships and sustainable initiatives, according to Araullo.

As a strategic partner to the marine industry, ATPI supports the Philippines as a critical hub by leveraging technology, global reach and in-depth operational expertise, she said. — Ted Cordero/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
