In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, Iran has committed to allowing the safe, unhindered, and expeditious passage of Philippine-flagged vessels, energy shipments, and Filipino seafarers through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro on Thursday held a “very productive” phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, where the Iranian official personally assured the Philippines of the safe passage.Philippines travel guides
“This positive development is vital for the Philippines,” Lazaro said, noting that the assurance will not only protect Filipino seafarers operating in the area but also help secure the country’s energy supply.
The Philippines imports the majority of its energy requirements from the Middle East. According to the DFA, Iran’s commitment will greatly facilitate the steady delivery of critical oil and fertilizer supplies to the nation.
Lazaro and Araghchi also discussed stronger bilateral cooperation across all fronts, despite the challenging security environment brought about by the current Middle East conflict. “The call concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to maintaining excellent relations and achieving lasting peace through continued dialogue and diplomacy,” DFA statement said.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is one of the world’s most vital oil transit chokepoints and has become an even more critical flashpoint amid the conflict. The assurance from Iran comes as a welcome development for the Philippines.
