Some 36 Filipino crew were on board two vessels that safely transited the Strait on 24 – 25 April

A total of 36 Filipino seafarers safely exited the Strait of Hormuz at the weekend on board a bulker and a super yacht.

The Philippines Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said that the Liberian-flagged Omicron Nikos and the Russian-flagged Nord has safely transited the Strait.

AIS data from Pole Star Global shows the bulker Omicron Nikos transiting the Strait on 24 April and is now near Khor Fakken in the UAE. The Russian super yacht Nord transited the Strait on 25 April and is now in Muscat, Oman.

It is not clear from the DMW how many Filipino seafarers were onboard each vessel.

The DMW said the crossing of the Strait of Hormuz by the two vessels brought the total number of Filipino seafarers to have safely exited the Arabian Gulf to close to 1,200 since the conflict between US – Israel and Iran started on 28 February with Iran effectively closing the waterway to commercial traffic.

Of the close 1,200 Filipino seafarers to exit the Gulf around 800 were onboard five cruise ships that successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz during in brief period on 17 – 18 April when the Strait was declared completely open by Iran and the US.

“The DMW continues to closely monitor vessel movements in the region and maintain coordination with manning agencies and shipowners to ensure the safety and welfare of Filipino seafarers. The Department also keeps communication lines open with the affected seafarers and their families,” the Department said.
