Soren Skou, head of the world’s biggest container ship operator, says government backing of carriers is creating overcapacity, distorting markets and pricing

AP Moller-Maersk AMKBY 0.64% A/S Chief Executive Soren Skou is calling for governments to withdraw their financial support for container shipping lines, saying subsidies and other backing are causing overcapacity and profit-crushing price reductions across the maritime industry.

Container ship KUALA MAS reported fire on board at 0730 WIB (UTC +7) Apr 27, near Pulau Norwana island, north of Jakarta, shortly after leaving Jakarta. 18 crew were evacuated, fire in superstructure said to be extinguished or under control by 1030 WIB, last known AIS was at 0030 UTC Apr 27 in position 06 00 S 106 52 E. The ship was bound for Malahayati, Aceh, north Sumatra, ETA Apr 30.

One seafarer has been found in good condition on board a Dutch vessel which was attacked by pirates in Nigeria over the weekend. There has been no success contacting the 11 kidnapped crew members.
