Filipino traders are in crisis due to the global shortage of cargo vessels and container vans. The shortage has caused inbound and outbound freight costs to increase by as much as five times the normal rate. Exacerbating matters is that shipping delays have become more the norm rather than the exception.
A Resolution passed by the UAE Council of Ministers at the beginning of July could mean an end to the abandonment of ships, and often their unpaid crews, in the country’s waters.
Based on the survey, the union intends to take up the issue with the Centre and other international bodies to ensure there are no further job losses in the sector.
